About Peartree B&B

A 17th Century Cottage in a rural location.

Originally two cottages, dating back to around 1700, the heavily beamed property is now one family home which we feel lends itself to bed and breakfast.

Breakfast can be taken in the garden room overlooking countryside views and our garden, or in the farmhouse style kitchen.

Guests are also welcome to use the large family sitting room complete with wood-burner!

Having renovated a small number of period properties over many years, Chris and myself, Jill, decided no more renovation … Let’s think about downsizing. The story of children leaving home etc.

Downsizing though … Never … When we viewed Peartree Cottage we knew we would be renovating once more. Self taught, DIY couple, we converted the old cottage to enable a small bed and breakfast home to be set up. We revamped the garden, which all guests are welcome to enjoy, together with lovely views across the fields and Colne Valley.

Now in our eleventh year of running our bed and breakfast, we continue to welcome new guests and many returning guests to our home. The shepherds hut continues to be very popular, even in the winter months. We are thrilled that our dream which began way back in 2013 is still continuing.

And for the next venture – scones, cakes, cuppas in our garden or if weather inclement in the garden room and/or traditional kitchen.  We can cater for a single couple or groups of up to 12 people.  Booking essential though to ensure freshly baked on the day.

Over the past few years, we have met so many interesting, friendly and inspiring people, and we are privileged that many of them return, often frequently, even from overseas.

Accomodation

Two Double Bedrooms

One double bedroom has its own cozy sitting room and staircase, large bathroom containing WC, washbasin, shower and Victorian style bath.
There is also a further separate WC and washbasin.

The second double bedroom is fitted out with its own ensuite with large shower, WC and washbasin.

Accomodation

Shepherd’s Hut

Following five successful years of our bed and breakfast rooms within our cottage, we have added a further addition to our guest accommodation.

This is in the style of a Shepherds Hut which is situated in our garden with again delightful views over the Colne Valley. The fondly named ‘Woolley Hut’ has been built specifically to our requirements by a local talented craftsman to provide double ensuite accommodation.

The ‘Woolley Hut’ has full ensuite facilities, a very comfy sofa bed pulling out into a 5ft bed, coffee/tea making facilities, TV and Wi-Fi. Guests can enjoy breakfast of their choice in our sun room, again overlooking the garden, or in the farmhouse style kitchen. Radiator and heated towel rail. Plenty of parking.

Breakfast

Traditional or Continental?

Breakfast can be taken in the newly built garden room overlooking countryside views and our garden, or in the farmhouse style kitchen.

Breakfasts are tailor made to guests requirements.  Continental breakfast can include yoghurt, fruit, cereals, cheese, cold meat, toast etc
Full English breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash browns, baked beans, toast ….  But basically down to the individual.

Information

The Local Area

Colne Engaine is a very attractive village about one mile from Earls Colne, and 3 miles from Halstead.  There are many eating places we can recommend in the local villages, and within 5 minutes walking distance of our Cottage is the Five Bells Public House and Restaurant – well served by local beers and delicious lunches and evening meals.

The village shop is well stocked with fresh local produce.

Our home is surrounded by glorious countryside and having lived in this beautiful area of Essex for all of our lives we can recommend many countryside walks and cycle paths being keen walkers and cyclists ourselves. We are a convenient stop for a night or two if walking the Colne Valley Path.

Peartree Cottage is well located for the market town of Sudbury and also the Roman town of Colchester famous for its Castle, Museum and shops.  Other local attractions include Constable Country, Gainsborough’s House in nearby Sudbury,  Colchester Zoo, Chappel Steam railway, the historic villages of Finchingfield, Lavenham and Long Melford to name but a few.
